How to Create a Simple Program in Visual Basic 6.0
Visual Basic 6.0 is a programming language and an integrated development environment (IDE) that allows you to create graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and applications using components and forms. Visual Basic 6.0 was released in 1998 and is no longer supported by Microsoft, but it is still widely used by beginners and hobbyists who want to learn the basics of programming. In this article, we will show you how to create a simple calculator program in Visual Basic 6.0 that can perform basic arithmetic operations.
Step 1: Create a New Project
To start a new project in Visual Basic 6.0, follow these steps:
Open Visual Basic 6.0 from your computer.
Click Standard EXE in the project selection field.
Click Open in the bottom-right corner of the window. This will create a new project with a blank form.
Step 2: Create the Calculator's Input Fields
To create the input fields for the calculator, follow these steps:
Select the Text Box tool from the left-hand side of the window. It looks like ab.
Click and drag your mouse on the form to draw an outline of the text box, then release the mouse button when the text box is the proper size. Ideally, your text box will be significantly longer than it is tall.
Select the text box, then press Ctrl + C to copy it.
Press Ctrl + V twice to paste two copies of the text box on the form. You should see your pasted text boxes appear in the upper-right side of the page. If prompted to create a new control array after pasting a text box, click No.
Arrange the text boxes in a vertical stack by clicking and dragging them. You should now have three text boxes aligned on the form.
Remove the text boxes' default text by clicking each text box, then clicking the text field to the right of the Text heading in the Properties pane on the right side of the window, then pressing Delete.
Step 3: Create the Calculator's Buttons
To create the buttons for the calculator, follow these steps:
Select the Command Button tool from the left-hand side of the window. It looks like a gray rectangle with three dots.
Click and drag your mouse on the form to draw an outline of the button, then release the mouse button when the button is the proper size.
Select the button, then copy it.
Paste four copies of the button on the form. You should see your pasted buttons appear in a horizontal row below the text boxes.
Rename each button's caption by clicking each button, then clicking the text field to the right of the Caption heading in the Properties pane on the right side of
the window, then typing in one of these values: Add, Subtract, Multiply, or Divide.
Rename each button's name by clicking each button, then clicking
the text field to
the right of
the Name
heading in
the Properties
pane on
the right side of
the window, then typing in one of these values: cmdAdd, cmdSubtract, cmdMultiply, or cmdDivide. This will help you identify each button later when writing code.
Step 4: Write Code for
the Calculator's Logic
